Depression is the most common psychological problem in the US. Estimates vary, but it’s generally presumed that twenty percent of US adults are depressed. Though it may not sound like a lot when stated as a percentage, as an actual number twenty percent of the US adult population amounts to tens of millions of people. With numbers that high, it wouldn’t be a great stretch to refer to depression as an epidemic.

One of the problems with depression is treatment. The reality of the situation is that depression typically responds quite well to treatment, and that depression is often overcome once treatment is initiated. While it’s true that some people don’t respond to certain types of depression treatments, odds are that at least one form or another of depression treatment will work for the person who needs it. This is meaningful as there are numerous depression treatments to be had, among them talk counseling and treatment with medications.

The problem with depression treatment is that most people with depression don’t get any sort of treatment at all. There are certainly a number of different potential reasons for this, including the stigma that still exists about admitting to being depressed. Another reason for lack of treatment for depression however is likely due to a lack of motivation. People tend to think of depression as completely psychological in nature, but the truth of the matter is that depression also has physical characteristics. People who become depressed can become so listless that physical activity may seem almost overwhelming.

There may be a tendency to label the depressed person as being in some sort of funk or even being temporarily lazy, but the frequency of lethargy within depressed people leaves little doubt that physical inertia is in fact a genuine symptom of depression itself, and not something separate. Acknowledging that a lack of motivation and will is a symptom of depression is one thing, but dealing with the reality of such a state is something else entirely. The person who’s depressed and is lacking will and energy can frustrate people who care for them, and can frustrate themselves as well. The thinking seems to go that the person who’s feeling depressed should just will him or herself into action, and again, even the depressed person can share in this sort of critical thinking.

Frustrating though it may be, it’s important to keep in mind that a lack of energy and physical action is a legitimate symptom of depression. While it’s true that lethargy in a depressed person can be tough for all parties involved to cope with, the positive news is that energy often comes back in a person with depression once they’ve initiated treatment for their depressed state.

Each person at some juncture in life needs to express their problem that is haunting them for a prolonged period of time. In most cases several many people tend to find it quite difficult to share their problems with family and kin. This is where the need for an expert counselor or therapist arises. The therapists are quite effective in enabling a person to get rid of his/her negative emotions by providing a perfect platform for him or her to tell each other their problems. Proper counseling can be given by a well trained counselor from a renowned counseling institute, such as the Scottsdale therapists or the Phoenix counseling. In this article, we have suggested one or more helpful and important points that will assist you in finding proficient therapists for yourself.

The first thing that you need to remember while selecting an effective therapist, is that he/she should be affiliated to a reputed establishment. Avoid going for to those counselors who just around your home or who are charging less fees. As such they may not prove to be that effective in sorting out your problems. Remember always go for a counselor who has belongs to or has a reputed establishment. You will not just waste your money.

Secondly, always remember that an effective counselor or therapist always aims at helping the patient and not to make money. So therefore, the therapist who you choose to consult should be interested in you. He/she should give a patient hearing to your problems and should make you feel quite comfortable so that you feel free to communicate. Those who are not interested in you will only give you textbook responses. They wouldn’t be bothered about assisting you out but only will be concern in making money out of you. The time and energy that you spend in going for attending one or more sessions with them will be completely futile.

Thirdly, before visiting any therapist always carry out a detailed check on the background of that counselor. If you aren’t able to contact anybody then you may also take the help of the internet to locate reviews of that therapist. All you have to do is to visit the business website of the therapist and continue reading the reviews that are uploaded by the previous clients. Go through the professional history section of the counselor for obtaining a good idea regarding the truthfulness of his/her performances.

Choosing a right therapist to surpass your problems and negative emotional state is a very crucial job. The counselor or the therapist you chose will impact your personal life and approach in a large way. Hence this cannot be done hurriedly or carelessly. The important points that we have highlighted in this article, if followed religiously, will help you in selecting an effective counselor who can counsel you rightly, scientifically and systematically.

Connor Sullivan recently studied new Scottsdale therapists while conducting research for an article.

Panic attacks are usually progressive in nature if they are not treated properly. Many people who suffer from panic attacks go for months and years before getting the correct diagnosis. They suffer needlessly either because of a lack of education about panic attacks or due to embarrassment of having a problem they cannot seem to will themselves out of.

The symptoms of a panic attack include but are not limited to:

• Difficulty breathing.

• Feeling as though you are not able to get enough air.

• Racing heartbeat.

• A sense of terror or dread.

• Severe anxiety level; feeling like you are on the verge of losing your mind.

• Dizziness, trembling, choking.

• Chest pain.

• Sweating, hot flashes.

• Tingling sensation.

People who have panic attacks tend to make connections between their anxiety and certain activities. This leads them to the conclusion that if they avoid the activity then they will not have the panic attack. Unfortunately this tends to gradually make their world shrink. They become comfortable with fewer and fewer experiences. They become embarrassed by their lack of control over the panic attacks and they start to avoid friends and family. They stop going to places that were once familiar. This may include the grocery store, the mall and their church. Eventually this can impede their education and/or their career. They may do the opposite and become quite needy on friends and family. Their friends and family often do not know what is going on and thus they do not give the support that is needed. These same people may also feel their own sense of helplessness as to what they should be doing to provide relief. The person with panic attacks becomes embarrassed and frustrated. They withdraw from the help that could be available. This avoidance behavior sets the stage for depression and eventual hopelessness. But please do not ever forget that Help Is Available!

I have treated thousands of cases of anxiety/panic disorder.

If you have been having panic attacks, here are some recommendations to decrease and hopefully eliminate them:

1. Immediately seek a psychiatric evaluation. You could seek a therapist first but the therapist will most likely send you to a psychiatrist anyway. Medication is the fastest way to control the panic attacks. This will decrease the anxiety so that the therapist can get to the root of the problem and teach you a variety of anxiety reducing techniques.

2. Find a therapist who is familiar with treating anxiety disorders. Not all therapists are good at helping these kinds of cases.

3. If your psychiatrist prescribes an anti-anxiety medication, please take them as recommended. Short term usage is usually required. Keep this medicine with you at all times because panic attacks can be very unpredictable.

Stress is a part and parcel of life and most of us have a flair of managing stress naturally. It is only when we lost control of how to control our stress level that we become depressed and suffered from anxiety disorder. In fact, the body’s natural relaxation response is a powerful antidote to stress. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga and meditation or even relaxing massage can help you activate this relaxation response. When practiced regularly, these activities lead to a stress reduction in your everyday life and a boost in your feelings of joy and serenity.

Life is full of stress. Almost daily, we are bombarded with stress from work deadlines to bills and commitments in the home. We often worry too much when we are exposed to too much work, lack of time, too much debt, family problems and relationship problems. Stress leads to tension, physical and emotional strain. In addition, stress can cause problems like tension headaches, insomnia, problems focusing, tiredness, weight loss, weight gain and even suppress our immune system. Hence, we really do need all the help we can to get to learn how to relax and calm our mind. So what can we do about stress? First, we need to realize that knowing how to relieve stress is very important to our health and well-being.

Then, we must learn to begin to focus on reducing the stress in your life before stress gets the best of you.

Deep Breathing For Stress Relief

Learn how to focus on your breathing by concentrating on the way you breathe in and breathe out. First, you need to sit comfortably with your back straight or lie comfortably with your palms spread out on the bed or on the floor. Next, while you are breathing in, inhale deeply and be aware of the air passing into your nostrils, into your lungs and feel your abdomen slowly inflating. Then, breathe out slowly and be aware of your abdomen which is slowly deflating and feel the air coming out of your nostrils. Smell the rejuvenating air and be totally concentrating on the path of the air from outside to inside of your body.

As proven on many people, deep breathing is a simple yet powerful relaxation technique. Deep breathing is very easy to learn and we can use it almost anywhere and anytime. It provides us with a very quick way to get our stress levels in control. In fact, deep breathing is the cornerstone of various other relaxation practices and it can be combined with other relaxing methods like yoga, meditation, aromatherapy, massage and music. All you need is a few minutes and a space for you to stretch out.

One ultimate point to remember when doing deep breathing is to inhale more oxygen. The more oxygen you get, the less tense, short of breath, and anxious you feel. So the next time you feel stressed, take a minute to slow down and breathe in and out deeply.

Mindfulness Meditation For Stress Relief

This is an effective meditation process to relax and calm your mind and body. Mindfulness meditation focuses on the presence which is NOW, instead of the past or future. Place your whole focus on what is happening right at this moment. Do a “Body Scan” of your whole body. Focus your whole attention on various parts of your body, starting with your feet and work your way up to your knees, thighs, stomach, hands, fingers, chest, face and finally to your head. Feel totally relaxed and loosen your muscles while you focus on your toes, ankles, knees to your abdomen, chest, hands, fingers to your nose, eyes and finally to the top of your head.

Body scanning cultivates mindfulness by focusing your attention on various parts of your body. When you focus on every parts of your body, you are subconsciously telling these parts of your body to relax which will in terms help you to dis-stress and become totally relaxed.

Imaginative Visualization Technique For Stress Relief

Our stress is all caused by something or someone. Hence, imaginative visualization technique for stress relief comes into good use to help you dis-stress. First, close your eyes and relax. Imagine that someone, something or an event that is causing your distress and anxiety. Place this visual imagery onto your palm. Imagine that this someone or something is actually so small and tiny on your palm. Once you can see this visual imagery of that tiny someone or something on your palm, inhale deeply and simply blow directly at this particular visual imagery away from your palm. Then, slowly visualize that this someone or something get blown away into the air and out into the outer space, never to come back again.

This imaginative visualization technique helps in making you know that all your stress activators are actually very minor and small. They cannot harm or hurt you in anyway. You can conquer them and make them disappear at anytime you want.

Yoga For Stress Relief

Yoga is an excellent stress relief technique. It involves a series of both moving and stationary poses, combined with deep breathing. Yoga is renowned to be able to help our body totally relax and calm our mind and soul. The physical and mental benefits of yoga provide a natural counterbalance to stress, and strengthen the relaxation response in your daily life.

The deep relaxation technique which is practised at the last part of a yoga session is extremely effective in bringing you to a transquil and serene state. In fact, this deep relaxation technique can be combined with the mindfulness meditation technique as mentioned above.

Massage Therapy For Stress Relief

Getting a massage provides deep relaxation, and as the muscles in your body relax, so does your overstressed mind. One of my favorite massage therapy to dis-stress and promote good health is the traditional Chinese acupressure massage.

In acupressure massage, therapists use their fingers to manipulate the body’s pressure points. You will feel pain on the body parts that the therapists pressed on, but you will benefit greatly as the stress and tightness on various parts of your body are being released and dissipated. Nonetheless, you must take note that you need to engage a qualified and professional acupressure massage therapist to do the massage on you. Personally, I do this acupressure massage once or twice a month to dis-stress and bring overall well-being and good health to my body, mind and soul.

Soothing Music Therapy For Stress Relief

Another good stress relief technique is to listen to soothing and relaxation music. Soothing and relaxation music is proven medically and scientifically to bring overall calmness to the body and bring your stress level to a minimum.

Listen to good quality music genres like classical music, yoga music or nature music to dis-stress. On the other hand, listening to metallic rock and loud and quick music will actually makes us even more stress and can affect our overall well-being. Hence, we should be selective in the kind of music that we listen. The best music for stress relief is soothing and relaxation music. You can find them easily at many music cds stores near your neighborhood or downtown.

No matter which stress relief techniques you use, do bear in mind that you yourself must also think positively and be optimistic. Learn to appreciate life and the people around you. Give more than you receive. Take care of your family members and friends. Show care and concern to the people around you. And lastly, take good care of yourself by eating well, sleeping well and exercising frequently. And not to forget, LOVE YOURSELF.

If you suffer constantly from overwhelming degrees of worry, or you are traumatized with fears that result in complications in your day to day life, you may be interested to know that a generalized anxiety disorder treatment could assist you. Generalized anxiety disorder, which is also referred to as “GAD” is a condition in which an individual experiences a tremendous amount of anxiety due to worrisome thoughts and various types of fears. Typically, these thoughts result in a general inhibition of the sufferer. This means that it may become difficult to work, socialize, relax, or to maintain an optimal level of health. If your anxiety reaches this level, it is essential to learn about generalized anxiety disorder treatment strategies.

In most cases, individuals that have general anxiety are unable to effectively control the psychological and physiological symptoms that they experience. These include symptoms such as immense feelings of dread, the inability to sleep well, concentration complications, gastrointestinal complications, and various types of fears related to job performance, social interaction, rejection, sexual performance, and lack of control. If you are at this point, professional generalized anxiety disorder treatment may be your best option. While many may improve by learning stress reduction techniques that can be performed outside a clinical setting, making lifestyle changes, and learning relaxation techniques, some individuals require more.

If you seek professional generalized anxiety disorder treatment, you may be surprised at the various clinical methods that can be used to control your symptoms. There are two basic strategies that therapists use to assist you. These include basic cognitive therapy sessions and medication treatment. Cognitive therapy will educate you on your condition, encourage you to monitor attacks, provide you with coping strategies, and educate you on how behavior changes will reduce attacks. Medication therapy works to reduce depression, calm consistent thoughts, and adjust neurotransmitters in the brain such as serotonin. If you suffer from this condition, seeking generalized anxiety disorder treatment will help in coping and recovering from the dark thoughts that plague your mind.

You can learn more about Panic And Anxiety Disorder and how you can beat the disorder by using natural ways by visiting Panic Away today.

The best cure for Anxiety/Panic Disorders?

Lately, I have been experiencing panic attacks everyday. They last from 30 mins – 2 hrs. I feel extremely light headed, tingly in my fingers & toes while getting a cold sweat, I immediately feel like something's seriously wrong with me, that I'm beginning to go insane, or that I'm about to die. I also feel like everything's unreal, or almost like I'm in an acoma and that everything is presently a dream. It feels like a bad high. I'm afraid to leave the house alone fearing that I may have a panic attack while I'm out. I'm afraid to go to work or school. I don't exercise anymore cause I feel extremely tired everyday and I'm scared I might faint while exercising. I've gone to the emergancy because my doctor perscribed me anti-depressants that reacted really badly with my body. Once I was there, the doctor said that my blood & heart were normal and that I had panic/anxiety disorders. Again I was perscribed medication in order to try and help calm my anxiety/panic attacks. However, I'm paranoid that if I do take this medication I will once again go through what I did w/ the anti-depressants. I have read that many feel medication for panic disorders don't completely help & that some people have experienced these symptoms for up to 10 yrs. I'm really scared that I might go through that. I've read adds on the net for books & CDs that help cure panic attacks w/o the need of medication. My question is, has anyone ever tried this method instead of using perscribed medication and which book/CD has worked the best for you? Thanks.

In case all the terms have confused you, panic attack is another words for anxiety attacks. A panic attack hits suddenly and overwhelms a person with feelings of terror and needing to flee.

Panic attacks are different from the normal anxiety all people will feel during a stressful event or emergency. Panic attack is a persistent problem that interferes with life. This article will describe panic attack disorder and explain what you can do to stop panic attacks.

Panic attacks can have many different physical symptoms that would normally go along with a fight or flee response in a real emergency. These include a rapid and pounding heart, rapid heart rate, nausea, sweating, light headedness, hot or cold flashes, chest pain, numb hands and feet, tingly or burning skin, irrational thoughts, fear of losing control, and a number of other symptoms. People might think they’re having a heart attack, asthma attack or just think something is horribly wrong.

Imagine that you’re standing at the check out counter, paying for your groceries, when suddenly you just can’t handle it. Your body is hit with an overwhelming physical reaction, forcing you to run from the store, leaving your groceries behind. These feelings (the anxiety attack) can be sudden terror and fear that strike for no reason and without warning.

Most readers probably want to understand the causes and symptoms of anxiety attacks, and also look for ways to stop panic attacks. A good and trusted source of information is The National Institute of Mental Health. This article explains some of their definition of Panic Disorder, also called Anxiety (or Panic) Attack Disorder. Around 19 percent of adults in the US experience a form of anxiety disorder, and 3 percent of adults anxiety attack disorder.

People at Risk for Panic Attack Disorder

People of any age can suffer from this condition, especially with the fast pace of life and many pressures that everyone experiences. The condition does seem to start most often in people ages 17 to 25. Children can even suffer from panic attacks, although it’s harder to catch in children. Once the child is calmed down, people are more likely to assume he is okay. More women have reported suffering from anxiety attacks, but doctors think men are less likely to report attacks.

Treating Panic Disorder

Panic attack disorder can be treated. Too many people live for years not knowing how to stop panic attacks. This condition doesn’t go away over time or get better by itself. But there is help! Any person can take control of their life with good information and support. It’s time to take action. You can stop panic attacks naturally with therapy and once again enjoy the freedom to go out and enjoy life.

Our innate desire is to be happy, and when we move away from it, we experience fear.

This fear is actually millions of years old, for it arises from the biological programming of our species.

While we may not have to contend with a sabre-toothed tiger on any given day, we still use those very reactions to deal with events looming ahead.

We think, “Will I be fired for making that mistake at work?” or “Will I be able to meet the mortgage after I fix the car?” or “Will my health continue to decline?” or “Will my relationship fall apart after that argument we just fell into?”

Running questions with this type of urgency and helplessness trains our brains to prepare now for future danger by loading our bodies up with the stress hormone cortisol.

Anxiety is our anticipation of a dangerous future. We imagine having even less of the little that we have today.

This anxiety does not help us in any way to meet the future any better. In fact, it weakens and exhausts us. We usually worry most about things that we can’t even control. Worrying about your dental visit, for example, will not make the visit better.

Anxiety, in fact, is a silent killer. It is enervating, and it drains you of purpose and hope, faith and initiative. It fogs up your thinking. And it makes the body susceptible to illness.

When anxiety–a fear of an event in the future–is high enough then you feel a deep sense of helplessness. This, in turn, translates into depression. You even begin to view the past as disappointing.

Caught between a miserable past and a frightening future you create a pattern of emotions that can lead to a variety of mood disorders, including manic-depression.

How do we escape from this vicious cycle?

Here is what I did 20 years ago and I have never since suffered from any serious mood disorder.

I started to cultivate my awareness of my mood swings–from elation to black despair.

I did this by basically watching myself when I was manic, and watching myself when I was depressed, and watching what I did to turn on these states. For example to get depressed, I used my love of literature to focus on dark, morbid, and unhappy stories about life. And to get elated, I would talk a lot, move very quickly, and do things in a dramatic way.

An interesting thing happened when I made my unconscious behavior conscious. I could not take my mood shifts seriously.

This is what I learned from that experience: when you are able to observe yourself over the course of a few weeks, you develop a curious detachment.

A paradoxical situation developed for me: I found it difficult to stay anxious and depressed when I was observing myself feeling anxious and depressed.

Ultimately, anxiety and depression are culturally-induced patterns of thinking that can be overcome through a deliberate cultivation of awareness. When you become your own observer, you weed out the unconscious habits that afflict you.

Despite the billions of dollars spent to heal anxiety and depression, and all the mood disorders and behavioral anomalies that arise from them, the cure is simple, quick, and free.

How do I know if i have social phobia/social anxiety disorder?

Ive always been really shy. I find it awkward to talk to others, especially when I don't know them very well. At school I NEVER talk. Even if someone trys to talk to me I usually just respond with one or two words. I find my face getting hot whenever I do talk like if its getting red. How do I know if I have social phobia or something similar?

Worry, fear, and anxiety are a normal part of our life. Have you experienced feeling anxious before taking an exam and later find out that you got a higher result more than what you’ve expected? Or, feeling anxious for a job interview and ended up getting hired, or feeling frightened walking down an alley where bad things often happened? Normal anxiety helps us cope in any stressful situation, it also keeps us watchful.

Mental health professional are not concerned with normal anxiety. But, if your anxiety suddenly occur without apparent reason and lasts for weeks to months and happens in most days than not, that is another issue. If anxiety persists in most days than not, and takes longer than six months, it has become an immobilizing disorder.

An anxiety disorder is a recurring and excessive anxiety and worry about events or activities without logical reasons at all lasting for more than six moths and it is interfering with everyday activities, such as going to work, and socializing. A person experiencing anxiety condition finds it difficult to control the feelings of worry and fear. The thing about people with anxiety disorder is that they actually know that what they think of feel is not real and that they are just made-up.

The common anxiety disorders are Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, Agoraphobia, Specific Phobia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Selective Mutism.

A person with anxiety condition may suffer different anxiety disorder symptoms. And because no two individuals are the same, the anxiety disorder symptoms may vary from one person to the other.

The physical symptoms of anxiety disorder are cause by brain sending messages to parts of the body to prepare for the flight-to-fight response. The lungs, heart, and other parts of the body work faster and the brain releases stress hormones, including adrenaline, and that explains that physical symptoms.

Anxiety disorder symptoms may experience physically can include but not limited to:

Abdominal discomfort

Diarrhea

Dry mouth

Rapid heartbeat or palpitations

Tightness or pain in chest

Shortness of breath

Dizziness

Frequent urination

Difficulty swallowing

Anxiety disorder symptoms may experience psychologically can include:

Insomnia

Irritability

Inability to concentrate

Fear of going crazy or dying

Feeling unreal and not in control of your behavior

There are several types of anxiety disorders and sometimes they are associated with physical problem such alcohol and drug abuse. Anxiety is the main symptoms of other mental illness called anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorder symptoms may differ from the symptoms of other anxiety disorders, but all the symptoms cluster around excessive, irrational fear and dread.

For people with anxiety condition, cheer up! Your world does not stop there because there is cure for anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are curable and there are two types of treatments available for anxiety disorder- medication and psychotherapy. But, it is said that the proven most effective way to treat anxiety sufferers is psychotherapy.
